terms of use.
The short version. Cortisol IQ gives you an estimate for wellness, not a medical reading. After setup, the app needs a subscription, which renews automatically until you cancel it in your Apple account settings. Apple handles billing and refunds.
1. Accepting these terms
By downloading or using Cortisol IQ (the iPhone app, the Apple Watch app and their widgets) you agree to these terms and to Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the "Apple EULA"). If these terms and the Apple EULA conflict, these terms apply, except for the Apple-specific terms in section 11, which always apply. Our privacy policy and Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy explain how we handle your data.
You must be 16 or older to use Cortisol IQ.
2. What Cortisol IQ is, and isn't
Cortisol IQ is a wellness app. It compares signals your Apple Watch records (for example HRV, heart rate, sleep and breathing rate) with your own usual and shows an estimated cortisol score. How it works explains the method and its limits, including what we've tested and what didn't pass.
- The score is an estimate. It doesn't measure cortisol or any other hormone, and it isn't a lab test.
- Cortisol IQ isn't a medical device. It doesn't diagnose, treat, cure, prevent or monitor any disease or condition, and it isn't meant for medical use.
- The optional readiness number is also an estimate. It doesn't tell you whether exercise is safe for you.
- Kai, the AI coach, generates answers with an AI model. Kai can be wrong, isn't a doctor and isn't medical advice.
- Don't start, stop or change any medicine or treatment because of the app. Check with a doctor in addition to using Cortisol IQ, and before making any medical decision.
- In an emergency, call your local emergency number. Cortisol IQ and Kai aren't crisis services and don't watch for emergencies. If you're thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 in the US, or your local emergency number.
3. Subscriptions and payment
Downloading Cortisol IQ costs nothing. After setup, the app needs a paid, auto-renewing subscription bought in the app through Apple's App Store.
- Plans. We offer weekly and yearly plans, and may offer others. The name, length and price of each plan, and any introductory offer, appear in the app, in your local currency, before you buy.
- Payment. Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase.
- Automatic renewal. Your subscription renews automatically for the same length at the then-current price unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your Apple Account is charged for the renewal within the 24 hours before the current period ends.
- Introductory offers. Some plans may start with a discounted first period, for example a lower price for your first year. The app shows the offer price, how long it lasts and the regular price that applies after it. When the offer ends, the plan renews at the regular price unless you cancel at least 24 hours before. Apple decides who is eligible, usually once per person per subscription group.
- Free trials. Plans don't currently include a free trial period. If we add one, the app will show its length and what happens when it ends, and any unused part of a trial is forfeited when you buy a subscription.
- Manage or cancel. Open iPhone Settings › your name › Subscriptions › Cortisol IQ, or You › More settings › Account and subscription › Manage subscription in the app. If you cancel, you keep access until the end of the period you've paid for. Deleting the app or your account doesn't cancel the subscription.
- Price changes. Apple notifies you of price increases and, where required, asks for your consent before the new price applies.
- Refunds. Payments are handled by Apple, and refunds are at Apple's discretion under its policies: request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. We can't issue refunds ourselves. When you ask Apple for a refund, Apple may ask us about your use of the app (see our privacy policy). This doesn't limit any refund rights you have under the law where you live.
- Restore. On a new device, use Restore purchases in the app with the same Apple Account.
4. Your licence to use the app
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use Cortisol IQ on Apple devices you own or control, as allowed by the Apple EULA and the App Store's Usage Rules, except that the app may be accessed by other accounts linked to the purchaser through Family Sharing where it's offered. We (and our licensors) keep all rights in the app, its design, the Kai character, the method and its content.
5. Acceptable use
Don't:
- copy, modify, reverse-engineer or resell the app, except where the law allows it despite this limit;
- try to get around subscriptions, security or rate limits, or access our systems or vendors' systems without permission;
- use Kai to produce unlawful, harmful or misleading content, or try to make it ignore its safety rules;
- use the app to make decisions about someone else's health, employment, insurance or credit.
We may suspend access if you break these rules.
6. Your content and Kai
You own what you type into the app. You let us process it only to run the features you use, as described in our privacy policy (for example, sending your Kai messages to our AI provider to write a reply). Kai's replies are generated automatically, may be inaccurate or incomplete, and are for general wellness information only.
7. Apple Health and your devices
The app needs an iPhone running iOS 26 or later and an Apple Watch on watchOS 11 or later, with permission to read Apple Health data. The score depends on what your watch records: wear it, including overnight. A reading may be missing or wrong, and we can't guarantee that any reading or score is accurate or available.
8. Changes to the app and these terms
We may change, add or remove features, or stop offering the app. If we discontinue a paid feature during a period you've paid for, you can ask Apple for a refund under its policies. We may update these terms; we'll change the date above and, for significant changes, let you know inside the app before they apply. If you keep using the app after that, the new terms apply.
9. Disclaimers and limits of liability
To the extent the law allows:
- the app, the score, readiness and Kai are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement;
- we aren't liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for decisions you make based on the score, readiness or Kai's replies;
- our total liability for any claim relating to the app is limited to the amount you paid for it in the 12 months before the claim.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't be limited by law, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud, or your statutory rights as a consumer.
10. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Colorado, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If you live in the EU, the UK or another place whose consumer laws give you the right to bring claims at home, you keep that right.
11. Apple-specific terms
These terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple isn't responsible for Cortisol IQ or its content.
- Licence. Your licence is limited to using the app on Apple-branded products you own or control, as the App Store's Usage Rules allow, except that it may be accessed by other accounts linked to the purchaser through Family Sharing or volume purchasing.
- Maintenance and support. We, not Apple, are responsible for providing maintenance and support. Apple has no obligation to provide any.
- Warranty. If the app fails to conform to any warranty that applies, you can notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any). To the maximum extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses caused by a failure to conform to a warranty are our responsibility.
- Product claims. We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claims by you or a third party relating to the app or your possession or use of it, including product liability claims, claims that the app fails to meet any legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws, including in connection with the app's use of HealthKit.
- Intellectual property. If a third party claims that the app or your possession and use of it infringes their intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are responsible for the investigation, defence, settlement and discharge of that claim.
- Legal compliance. You confirm that you aren't located in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you aren't on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Third-party terms. You must comply with any third-party terms that apply when using the app (for example, your wireless data service agreement).
- Third-party beneficiary. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms, and once you accept them, Apple has the right (and is deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.
